You Only Hate Social Media If You Don’t Make It Yours

I know it’s a wrongfully held, but common belief that book readers are smarter or more intelligent than those who aren’t.

As an example, my boyfriend is a successful, well-paid media professional who has taught himself photography, videography, podcast production, songwriting, live performance programming and how to play multiple instruments.

I don’t think he’s read a full chapter book since I met him over 10 years ago.

His brain just doesn’t like it. His primary sources of learning are video and audio.

He’s also one of the most intelligent and resourceful people I know.

(Of course I’m biased. He’s the love of my life gosh damnit.)

But I’m building all this up to say that I believe true learners can get what they need from anything.

I’ve been a book reader since I was like 4 years old.

But I also LOVE the internet as a whole and find great joy and education at every corner of it.

I have no shame or hang ups in saying that I learn from the most culturally frowned upon “time wasters” of social media sites.

Sure, they’re entertaining, but they’re also so fascinating.

And anyone who tells you that social media is exclusively a waste of time simply hasn’t put forth enough intention and effort into curating a feed that serves them in some way.

I have certain sites I prefer more than others for certain functions, but they all DO function in the way I want them to.

I also have multiple accounts on different sites if I want different vibes.

For example, I have one Instagram that’s public for keeping up with real peeps and pop culture, and one that is private, exclusively following accounts to teach me about what I’m trying to learn or to hype me up with motivation,

One is relaxing and mindless, and one gives me energy.

I also keep multiple Pinterest, Twitter, and YouTube accounts.

I’m not endorsing the multi account lifestyle or anything. I’m simply saying that the internet is free education or entertainment or inspiration if that’s how you want to use it.

Likewise, it’s not as if every book is helpful or educational either.

I’ve read awful books.

I’ve read harmful books.

I think you know what I’m getting at and I can move on lol...

Anyway, here’s some fun / interesting / helpful / educational shit my “time wasting” social media apps have shown me lately:
